Making sure your AC unit is ready for the summer is really very easy to understand. If the unit is low on refrigerant, the unit will strain to cool the home correctly. Having a dirty air filter can do the same. Also, certain parts on the AC Unit may not be working quite right and should be replaced to insure proper function. Also, just doing a basic safety check of the electrical is always a good idea to be sure you're ready for the real heat of the summer.

The most often asked questions are, how often should we replace our filter and what's the best temperature to set the thermostat at. Answer: We recommend that you change your filter each month in the late spring until early fall. That's when the AC runs most. The temperture setting is usually best set around 78 degrees. This setting insures that the ac runs less often in the hotter times of the year. 

 Air conditioners have three main components: a compressor, a condenser coil, and an evaporator coil. The outdoor ac unit or heat pump, is the condenser unit, which houses the compressor, while the indoor unit is the evaporator unit with blower fan. They use a chemical called refrigerant, AKA "Freon" that loops through the system absorbing the heat and moisture from the air. Working together these three components convert the refrigerant from a gas to a liquid and back to a gas again.

When the system is low on refrigerant, the entire cooling process is greatly reduced. It's important to check the refrigerant level each year to be sure the ac system if running at its best.
